The Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar The Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar The Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar

Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar is located in the center of the settlement Sultan Gala, close to Mary. The grand tomb was built in the 40s of the XII century, together with the mosque and the palace of the Seljuk Sultan Sanjar. This large building built by a local architect Muhammad ibn al-Atsyz Sarahs. Seljuk Sultan Ahmad Sanjar ordered to build for themselves the mausoleum where he then was buried in 1157, but in 1221 the remains of the sultan were reburied in an unknown location.

The tomb is a majestic domed structure, and the lower part of the cubic form is completed arched gallery, where to this day preserved brick ornament and ganch. Go to the gallery eight windows through which light enters the high hall, 36 meters high. The inner surface of the dome dismembered brick decorative edges, forming a loop huge star, and unusually thick walls, up to five meters, provided the mausoleum duty to preserve.

Sultan Sanjar was an interesting personality. At age 15, he shows talent novice politician, and in 18 years shows the makings of a brilliant commander, defeating the army Karakhanids. In 30 years, he comes to the absolute power of the Seljuk Empire, which stretches from the Amu Darya River to the Mediterranean Sea. Its pearl capital Sanjar announces Merv.

The total height of the building is 38 meters, width of 27 meters and a wall thickness of 5 meters at the base. The structure has a cubic shape. The dome consists of two thin brick shells (outer lining turquoise dome was not preserved), under it are three-tiered gallery through a openwork arches. Such an architectural method will be used Italian Filippo Brunelleschi in the construction of the arch of Santa Maria de Fiore in Florence, only three centuries in the Renaissance. Surprising harmony and symmetry of proportions is amazing, even now. The mausoleum is a place of pilgrimage for thousands of believers and attracts many foreign tourists.
